Lightning Chats w/ Amantha Perera: Unearthing Hidden Government Information Using RTI

Right to Information (RTI) is a powerful tool to help us access public data that isn’t publicly available. Amantha Perera explores how RTIs helped reveal vital information about one of the Southern Expressway expansion projects.

This is the 2nd episode of “Lightning Chats on Public Data” by Verité Research – a series exploring the need for public access to public data held by government agencies. By highlighting the experiences of researchers, advocates, professionals and officials from various areas of expertise, we hope to create a conversation on the need to #MakePublicDataPublic.

Amantha Perera is a Researcher at the School of Education and the Arts at CQUniversity in Australia. His past work has included training and building awareness among journalists on using RTI as an add-on tool and its usefulness in reporting. His current research explores the confluence of online trauma threats and journalism during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
