Environment

Environmental, disaster risk and climate risk management are integral to the growth and prosperity of Sri Lanka. However, integration of these factors into planning and decision making has been weak. Verité’s research focuses on the governance, legislation and monitoring mechanisms to strengthen environmental accountability. For example, Verité’s research on the incursion of Tamil Nadu trawlers into Sri Lankan waters led to a legislative solution to completely ban the highly destructive practice of bottom trawling and all forms of illegal trawl net fishing. Verité’s in depth understanding of the legal and institutional framework for disaster management in Sri Lanka has led to proposing potential policy solutions to increase the resilience of the private sector. Verité’s unique ability to deliver strategic insights on environmental issues is drawn from its ability to tap into the wealth of knowledge that lies within the economics, law, politics and media research practices.
